ABOUT
After two years away, SFGC returns to Davies Symphony Hall for its annual December concerts showcasing all six levels of the Choral school, as well as the award-winning Premiere Ensemble, and SFGC Alums, in a dynamic program of spirituals, cutting-edge vocal works, and a few familiar holiday favorites, including Silent Night.

This year, SFGC at Davies features a world premiere commission by percussionist Susie Ibarra, who will also perform alongside the Chorus. The program includes a performance of “Fire” from Canadian composer Katerina Gimon’s The Elements, as well as excerpts from “The Journey of Harriet Tubman” by Ron Kean, featuring guest soprano Christabel Nunoo.

Dr. Kean’s multimedia work, 5 movements long in its full form, is a reimagining of the way spirituals may have been performed before the Civil War. The piece evokes the west African musical heritage of the enslaved peoples who would have sung these spirituals.
